2021 Summer Student Program

Summer Student work term and pay

As a Summer Student, you’ll get:

Opportunities

We have 2 work opportunities for you to choose from: Business Support and Operational Support.

Business Support

The following content lists the types of tasks you can expect in a Business Support role.

 

Administrative

  • Forward documents and correspondence to the appropriate sections within the organization
  • Interact with internal departments, and external stakeholders
  • Job shadow staff to learn more about your career goals
  • Help manage general phone lines and action requests or direct calls
  • Call clients on behalf of employees
  • Write letters to external agencies

Day-to-day

  • Help employees with day-to-day responsibilities and special projects.

Specialized positions

  • There may be specialized positions available in Public Works, relating to civil engineering and environmental sciences.

Vaccine Community Clinics

  • Answering phones, responding to emails, mange clinic flow, manage clinic supplies, greeting, clinic registration and check in

Operational Support

The following content lists the types of tasks you can expect in an Operational Support role.

 

Administrative

  • Process payments
  • Communications and interpersonal
  • Greet customers, provide excellent service

Day-to-day

  • Work at various centres across the Region including community recycling centres, road operations, and TransHelp
  • Maintain and clean heavy equipment, light vehicles, and garbage compactor equipment
  • Help repair vehicles. (You must be studying for a mechanic careers for this role.)
  • Provide traffic control
  • Help with landscaping, mowing, gardening, and litter pickup
  • Load and unload supplies and equipment

Vaccination Community Clinics

  • Receiving, sorting and distributing clinic supplies, unloading supplies, parking lot attendant, screening

Qualifications and requirements

The following content lists the criteria for being a summer student at Peel Region.

  • You must be a full-time student enrolled in post-secondary program or entering full-time post-secondary studies in September 2021.
  • Be available to work inclusively from May to August 2021.
  • Be familiar with MS Office.
  • Be customer-service focused.
  • Have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Have excellent organizational and time management skills.

For some roles:

  • A valid “G” Drivers license in good standing is required.
  • Previous office, labour, or volunteer experience is an asset.
  • Experience in using manual and power tools equipment is an asset.

  • February 2021 - Screening and interviewing (returning students do not need an interview.)
  • March/April 2021 – Offers and packages will be emailed
  • May 3, 2021 - First day of work
  • September 3, 2021 - Last day of work

Location: Due to Covid-19, some of our offices are working at limited capacity to protect the health and safety of our employees, clients and community. As such, these positions may be required to work remotely for an undetermined period. Once working onsite, you may report at various sites across Peel Region.
