Prinicipal Planner

Public Works – Development Services

Status: Contract Full-time (13 Months)

Salary Range: $103,175 - $128,969.00 per annum plus comprehensive benefits

Hiring Range: $103,175.00 - $116,072.00 per annum

Location: 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton

Hours of work: 35 hours/week

 

What you will do in this role: 

The Principal Planner provides the Development Services division with expertise to implement Regional requirements into local municipal planning applications through the review and comment on all forms of complex development, including:

    • Official Plan amendments
    • Re-zonings
    • Site plans
    • Plans of subdivision and condominium
    • Niagara Escarpment Development Permits and Plan amendments
    • Parkway Belt amendments
  • Resolve conflicts and identify appropriate implementation measures
  • Consult with area municipalities, developers, consultants, property owners, legal counsel, the public, the province, and other agencies
  • Prepare and  present written and oral reports/briefings and make recommendations and expert advice to Regional Council, senior staff, local municipal partners and agencies in addition to stakeholders
  • Identify needs for process improvements, protocol/procedural changes, and policy changes
  • Lead development of improvements in consultation with the Development Services Management Team
  • Input and maintain data in the Regional development application tracking system.
  • Conduct site inspections and undertake research as required
  • Represent and defend the Region’s development interests at the Local Planning Appeals Tribunal (LPAT) and other tribunals
  • Negotiate and advocate as spokesperson at:
    • Regional Council
    • LPAT pre-hearings
    • Inter-regional and intra-regional initiatives
  • Chair and participate in internal and external committees with significant service delivery impact
  • Provide direction and allocate work to Planners, Junior Planners, Administrative staff, contract staff, and student placements (summer and co-op)

What the role requires:

  • Expert knowledge of planning legislation including the Provincial Policy Statement, the Planning Act and local municipal planning framework
  • Familiarity with federal acts and other legislation affecting Land Use Planning, and other related planning legislation, policies and guidelines
  • Ability to act as expert witnesses at the Local Planning Appeals Tribunal (LPAT) and other tribunals
  • Knowledge and understanding of Provincial, GTA, Regional, and local municipal planning issues
  • A Master’s degree or a four year honors university degree in planning or a related field plus expert knowledge and further specialization within the planning field. Areas of specialization could include environmental management and ecosystem planning, resource management, policy planning, social planning, demographics, economics, statistical analysis, systems design, modeling, database design, Geographic Information Systems, urban and rural policy, and planning law
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a responsible planning position or related field
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team setting
  • Full Membership in OPPI/CIP
  • Strong working knowledge of GIS and its applications to development review
  • Well developed communications, analytical, problem solving and computer skills

Work Mode & Job Location: In this role, you'll enjoy the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement. This means you'll have the ability to work off-site and on-site as needed, depending on operational needs at the 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton worksite. The frequency of on-site work may vary from week to week, depending on operational demands, which can evolve over time.

It's important to note that your off-site work location must be within the province of Ontario. This ensures that we're compliant with all regulations and policies.
