Co-op Student, Transportation Maintenance - Green Infrastructure 

Public Works, Transportation

Status: Temporary Full Time, Duration 4 months - Fall 2025

Salary Range: $23.74 per hour

Work Mode: Onsite

 

Location: 2 Copper Rd, Brampton / 2941 King St W, Caledon

Hours of work: 35 hours per week

What you will do in this role:  

  • To assist staff with inspection of Regional road green infrastructure assets such as: trees, tree watering devices, shrubs, landscaped beds and grass boulevards.
  • Perform green infrastructure asset inspections and assess for condition, size, remedial actions / problem solving as required and the residual financial implications.
  • Document asset inspections, using a tablet computer and GPS Trimble Unit.
  • Update GIS Roadway asset data for use in the printing of maps and calculating asset quantities.
  • Assist with developing and administering plans for maintenance activities
  • Administrate repair contract/contractor with priority lists and effectively evaluate such works.
  • Provides field verifications on work completed by external contractors on Regional roads.
  • Assist with identifying required remediation and/or removal and replacement for damaged assets.
  • Prepare and compile related work orders to efficiently manage work flow and schedule contractors.
  • Assist with creating and implementing data spreadsheets for inventory and inspections.
  • Monitor, update and create GIS and Excel sheet data for the Region’s green infrastructure asset inventory.
  • Creation of new and/or modify existing electronic forms including the utilization of complex formula in Microsoft Excel.
  • Assist with implementing record keeping best practices, material reviews and maintenance manuals and if required provide recommendations as required.
  • Researching products for inclusion on the Region’s approved materials list.
  • Assist with policy research and development implementing “Best Practice” protocols.
  • Assist with annual and season budget preparation.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

 

What the role requires: 

  • Currently enrolled in university or college co-op program in an environmental field such as Forestry/Horticultural Technology and or landscape architecture
  • Ability to identify tree, shrub and natural vegetation species found in the urban and natural environments
  • Must have a valid “G” driver’s license (in good standing) 
  • Familiar with best practices for tree care (identify proper pruning cuts, watering frequencies, etc.)
  • Familiar with basic forest measurement practices
  • Experience with tree surveying equipment, including a clinometer and Trimble GPS unit
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint etc.)
  • Must be able to fulfill physical requirements of the job which requires moderate driving, lifting and walking.
  • Previous work experience would be an asset.
  • Must have safety shoes or boots with CSA “Green Patch” rating
