Co-op Student, Asset Inspection of Roadways

Public Works, Transportation

Status: Temporary Full Time, Duration 4 months - Fall 2025

Salary Range: $23.74 per hour 

Work Mode: Onsite

 

Location: 2 Copper Rd, Brampton

Hours of work: 35 Hours per week

 

 

Who we are:Working with the Transportation Maintenance group, you will be supporting a dynamic team of individuals who perform roadway asset inspections and assess for condition, size, remedial actions / problem solving as required and the residual financial implications. We are looking for a self-starter who possesses strong data collection and analytical skills, can effectively communicate findings and ideas, and has the ability to build and foster collaborative working relationships.

 

You will be focused on supporting in the development and delivery of implementing record keeping best practices, material reviews and maintenance manuals and if required provide recommendations as required.

 

What you will do in this role:  

  • Undertake the setup of data collection software and development of data collection protocols;
  • Identify tree, shrub and natural vegetation species within Regional road rights-of-way;
  • Collect street tree asset data and condition assessment including Species, DBH, crown width, height, and health for approximately 16,000 street trees;
  • Collect data electronically in the field and export into analytical and mapping programs including Hansen and ArcGIS;
  • Navigate efficiently to a variety of locations to undertake the survey;
  • Collect data to determine the environmental value and service of trees and veracity of data collection methods;
  • Document survey methodology, protocol and results of analysis
  • Assist with preparing and compiling related work orders to efficiently manage workflow and schedule contractors for tree removals, stump grinding
  • Assist with developing and administering planting plans for replacements and other maintenance activities
  • Assist with identifying tree assets that require remediation and/or removal and replacement
  • Assist with documenting methodology, protocol and results of analysis including changes in the urban forest since the last survey

 

What the role requires: 

  • Currently enrolled in university or college program in Civil / Land Surveying / Construction in Engineering / Technology co-op program. 
  • Must have a valid “G” driver’s license (in good standing)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions
  • Knowledge of Minimum Maintenance Standards (Reg.239/02) and “Best Practice” protocols as set out by Transportation Association of Canada.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft office and GIS (Word, Excel and PowerPoint etc.)
  • Must be able to fulfill physical requirements of the job which requires moderate driving, lifting and walking.
  • Must have safety shoes or boots with CSA “Green Patch” rating
  • Previous work experience would be an asset.
