Technician, Sampling 

Public Works - Water and Wastewater

Status: Contract Full-time Position (12-month Term)
Hiring Range:
$75,696 - $85,159 per annum plus comprehensive benefits

Work Mode: On-site 

Location: 3515 Wolfedale Road, Mississauga, ON

Hours of work: 35 hours/week


Overview

Peel Region provides clean drinking water and responsible wastewater management for its residents. The pollution control team employs state-of-the-art technology and best practices to minimize environmental impact. Through rigorous monitoring, proactive maintenance and continuous improvement initiatives, our team works diligently to protect the Region’s waterways and promote public health and sustainability.

 

The role:

Reporting to the Supervisor of Pollution Control, you will play a crucial role in maintaining environmental standards by accurately and consistently collecting representative industrial discharge samples. Your work, conducted according to strict standard methods, will be vital for laboratory analysis and the enforcement of the Region of Peel's Wastewater By-law 53-2010. In this role you will:

  • Collect wastewater samples from Peel based processing industries and institutions. 
  • Document and submit all sampling activities to help maintain the accuracy and integrity of all samples. 
  • Clean, prepare, and maintain the sampling equipment to ensure that a highly accurate and representative sample is obtained. 
  • Schedule sampling routes daily to utilize time in the most effective manner. 
  • Sample unknown liquids and dealing with potential chemical. 
  • Identify potential water pollution/safety hazards, illegal conditions and relay to supervisor ensuring enforcement of the current Wastewater By-law
  • Be aware of confined space regulation and preparation of confined space entry plans. 
  • Flow and compliance monitoring of contract facilities. 
  • Enter daily samples into the Laboratory Information Management System and preparing the daily sheets for the next day. 
  • Prepare monthly reports detailing day to day activities.

What the role requires:

  • Successful completion of a degree/diploma in Chemistry/Environmental.
  • One to three years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
  • Excellent communications, both written and verbal.
  • Strong ability to compile and organize information to allow further analysis.
  • Occasionally required to provide direction to other employees or act as team leader by allocating work, assigning tasks, or providing guidance. May provide input into performance reviews.
  • Respond to non-routine requests for information or conduct further research and study with other internal contacts. May schedule, organize activities with other internal contacts.
  • Highly effective analytical skills to make sound decisions based on facts.
