Job Description

Public Health Nurse (Temporary Full-time)

Duration: Approximately 12 months

Health Services –Family Health 

 

 

The Family Health Division requires a self-directed individual to work within a collaborative team environment to design and deliver reproductive health programming.  Programming focuses are preconception and prenatal health directed to people in their childbearing years. 

 

 

Team Specific Responsibilities: 

  • Facilitate prenatal education programs (e.g. Healthy Start, Teen Prenatal Supper Club, Teen Education and Motherhood, Parenting and Catholic Education) to pregnant women in need and provide direct client services through 1:1 assessments  while working in a multidisciplinary team setting
  • Plan, develop, implement and evaluate reproductive population-level strategies using an evidence-informed approach while working in a multidisciplinary team setting
  • Develop and strengthen strategic partnerships with key stakeholders including health professionals, hospitals and community agencies to increase access and reach to prenatal education
  • Use performance measurement tools to inform program decisions
  • Utilize End-to End Public Health Practice and public health nursing core competencies in day-to day work

 

 

General Responsibilities:

  • Apply knowledge regarding concepts of population health status, inequities in health, determinants of health, and strategies for health protection and promotion to guide practice
  • Utilize research and evidence and apply critical appraisal skills to inform policies, programs and practice
  • Provide health information, teaching and counselling to clients
  • Use a holistic approach to assess the health status and functional competence of clients with consideration of the impact of the determinants of health
  • Identify and analyze how clients’, culture, attitudes, beliefs and feelings about health influence interventions
  • Establish mutually determined goals with client, including outcome indicators and evaluative measures
  • Facilitate client engagement in identifying and defining health issues using community development and community assessment skills
  • Participate in the planning, developing, implementation and evaluation of community wide and site specific public health strategies using Evidence Informed Decision Making (EIDM)
  • Advocate for and contribute to the development of healthy public policy
  • Collaborate with partners to identify and address public health issues and service gaps in order to achieve improved health outcomes
  • Develop, foster and facilitate intersectoral partnerships and networks using team building, negotiation, conflict management and group facilitation
  • Demonstrate culturally sensitive approaches and strategies with diverse populations
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Promote awareness of the Region of Peel and Public Health services
  • Participate in research, quality assurance initiatives, and mentorship opportunities as appropriate
  • Adhere to public health and nursing ethical standards and principles
  • Fulfill legal and professional obligations and responsibilities in accordance with relevant legislation and departmental policies, procedures and medical directives/acts as an ambassador for the Region of Peel, Public Health Services and Public Health Nursing
  • Perform other duties as assigned which support the organizational goals
  • Respond to public health emergencies, significant events and incidents as required by the Health Protection and Promotion Act and Emergency Standards

 

  Qualifications:

  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or equivalent recognized by a Canadian University
  • Current license to practise as a Registered Nurse by the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Experience in public health or community health nursing is preferred
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships
  • Analytical and problem solving skills
  • Advocacy, negotiation and conflict management skills
  • Assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation skills
  • Relevant computer skills (MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel) and the ability to work with databases
  • Effective public relations, presentation, public speaking, group facilitation and diplomacy skills
  • Effective organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to apply appropriate theory and learning principles to practice
  • Knowledge of Peel’s diverse community and associated health impacts

 

Location: 7120 Hurontario St. Mississauga, ON

Hours of work: 35 hours/week – Tuesday through Saturday with flexible hours of work including evening hours

 

Preference will be given to qualified candidates who are currently in the bargaining unit.
