Job Description

Legal Counsel, Business Law

Corporate Services – Legal Services

Contract Duration: Approximately eighteen (18) months

(With Possibility of Extension or Regular Full Time)

 

Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel of Business Law, The Regional Municipality of Peel is seeking a Lawyer to join its Business Law practice group.

The Role:

  • The review, drafting and negotiation of contracts and documents of all types, related to the business operations and other municipal services of the Region including complex agreements, corporate/commercial documents, infrastructure project agreements, and construction  contracts
  • Providing high quality, concise, timely and effective legal advice on general corporate/commercial,  infrastructure projects, public procurement,  contracting and construction contracting matters
  • The review and drafting of complex procurement documents
  • Providing strategic direction and advice to Regional staff on all business related matters
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • LL.B. or equivalent and be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience as a practicing lawyer in corporate/commercial law work primarily in the context of reviewing, negotiating and drafting a broad range of complex business agreements and other legal documentation, including those related to the procurement of goods and services, construction and infrastructure projects
  • Experience in the area of corporate/commercial law, public procurement and construction agreements
  • Possess excellent communication, drafting, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrate sound judgement, tact, patience, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a collegial team environment with both colleagues and support staff and to maintain composure under pressure
  • Ability to multi-task and balance competing priorities and manage and develop relationships with members of the public, other legal counsel and senior management
  • Must have sound judgment in providing practical legal advice in support of the Region’s business needs and negotiating complex agreements, often under tight deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills are also required
  • Experience in the area of municipal law would be considered an asset

 

 

Location: 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton

Hours of work: 8:30am-4:30pm; Monday to Friday
