Prenatal Educator- Casual Part-time

Health Services - Family Health

The Reproductive and Child Health program of the Family Health division requires a self-directed, flexible and enthusiastic Public Health Nurse to work on the Health Promotion and Prenatal Initiatives team.

Team Specific Responsibilities:

• Provide prenatal education in a group format (weeknight and weekend classes) to women and their partner/support person(s) in Bolton, Brampton and Mississauga.
• Apply adult-learning principles to effectively facilitate and deliver Peel Public Health's key messages to enable participants to make informed decisions to achieve a healthy pregnancy, positive birth experience and preparation for the early parenthood. 
• Promote access to formal supports by increasing awareness of Public Health programs and community resources for families with young children.
• Contribute to a positive workplace culture by working effectively on an individual basis and in team environments.
• Attend mandatory quarterly prenatal education business meetings.

General Responsibilities:

• Provide health information and teaching to clients in group settings.
• Identify and analyze how clients’, culture, attitudes, beliefs and feelings about health influence interventions.
• Demonstrate culturally sensitive approaches and strategies with diverse populations.
• Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
• Promote awareness of the Region of Peel and Public Health services.
• Participate in research, quality assurance initiatives, and mentorship opportunities as appropriate.
• Adhere to public health and nursing ethical standards and principles.
• Fulfill legal and professional obligations and responsibilities in accordance with relevant legislation and departmental policies, procedures and medical directives/acts as an ambassador for the Region of Peel, Public Health Services and Public Health Nursing.
• Perform other duties as assigned which support the organizational goals.
• Respond to public health emergencies, significant events and incidents as required by the Health Protection and Promotion Act and Emergency Standards.

  Qualifications:

• A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or equivalent recognized by a Canadian University
• Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse by the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Knowledge and over one (1) year related experience in prenatal education, reproductive health and adult learning principles
• Experience in public health or community health nursing is preferred
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Availability to work a minimum of 63 hours per year
• Ability to work at any Peel Region work site including Caledon/Bolton, Brampton and Mississauga
• Knowledge of Peel’s diverse community and associated health impacts
• Effective public relations, presentation, public speaking, group facilitation and diplomacy skills
• Ability to apply appropriate theory and learning principles to practice
• Advocacy, negotiation and conflict management skills
• Effective organizational and time management skills
• Effective oral and written communication

Location: Various sites throughout Peel region
Hours of Work: Evenings, 6:30pm - 9:30pm and Saturdays, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
