    Supervisor, Workplace Health, Safety & Wellness

    Corporate Services - Human Resources

    The Role…..

    Reporting to the Manager, Workplace Health, Safety & Wellness, we are fostering a culture of health, safety and wellness though the development, implementation, and evaluation of quality programs and practices, within a comprehensive health and safety management system. This includes leading a team of health, safety and wellness professionals to ensure the Region meets or exceeds all applicable occupational health and safety legislative & and regulatory compliance, as well as, mitigation of risks, including the integration of psychological health and safety into our approach.

     

    Responsibilities:

                           

    • Foster the development and maintenance of a strong workplace safety culture and Internal Responsibility System
    • Develop, implement and maintain a sustainable comprehensive safety management system that integrates: leadership and commitment; hazard identification and risk assessment; risk management and control; evaluation and corrective action; strategic review and continual improvement.
    • Collect, manage and analyze relevant program data to enable reporting on program progress (e.g. through annual workplace health and safety program report and contributions to the Human Resource report/scorecard.) Prepare and present program updates to senior leadership including our Executive Leadership Team.
    • Provide leadership, coaching, and support for front-line staff in the delivery of Health, Safety and Wellness services to their client groups.
    • Promote a service-oriented culture within the section. Also promote teamwork integration between section staff and other Region of Peel parties involved in the day to day operations. 
    • Handle issues escalated from reporting staff and approve major transactions.
    • Conduct performance appraisals for immediate reports and handles performance issues and makes staffing decisions for immediate reports.
    • Ensure staff development and training are current and in keeping with changing policies, practices and legislation.
    • As a member of the Workplace Health, Safety & Wellness sectional leadership team, contribute to the leadership of the section including development and implementation of sectional policies, business plans and processes, values, budgets and staffing levels.
    • Provide advice and guidance in the areas of workplace health, safety and wellness (e.g. development of relevant client workforce strategies, work accommodations, injury and absence  trends and management strategies.)
    • Represent the Region in Ministry of Labour inspections and compliance issues. Where appropriate represent the Region with Regulatory Agencies (Ministry of Labour, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and the Ontario Human Rights Commission). Represent the employer’s interest during appeals at both WSIB and WISIAT hearings.
    • Ensure compliance with appropriate legislation such as the Occupational Health and Safety ActWorkplace Safety and Insurance Actand the Human Rights Code. Work with internal and external professionals as necessary to achieve this goal.
    • Prepare and maintain sectional budget, aligning resources to achieve divisional and sectional objectives as determined through the business planning process.
    • Ensure health and safety programs and services assist Peel to attract, hire, develop and retain quality staff.
    • Integrate psychological health and safety concepts into leadership approaches, business practices, and program offerings.
    • Research, analyze and make recommendations on the current state and best practices related to workplace health, safety and wellness. In collaboration with departments and divisions, reporting staff and other HR sections, identify needs and prioritize areas for attention whether corporate wide or specific targeted areas.
    • Develop and manage corporate contracts, vendor relationship, and monitoring service quality.

     

    Qualifications:

     

    • University degree in Occupational Health and Safety, or related degree or Program.
    • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation
    • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant Occupational, Health & Safety experience.
    • At least 3 years of supervisory/leadership experience demonstrating strong leadership skills.
    • Knowledge of relevant employment legislation (Occupational Health and Safety ActOntario Labour Relations Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act and the Ontario Human Rights Code), the arbitration process, CSA Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace
    • Extensive written and verbal communication skills including one to one, group setting, and corporate wide, for the purposes of education, reporting, problem analysis and solution implementation.
    • Proficient collaboration, negotiation, facilitation, consulting and partnership building skills.
    • Highly developed analytical skills, including data analysis and reporting skills.
    • Exercises sound judgement and make decisions within scope of position.
    • Project management and process improvement skills
    • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office Programs.  Experience working with Parklane System would be an asset.

     

    Location: 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton

    Hours of Work: 35 hours/week – Monday through Friday
