    Job Description

    Supervisor, Health Protection 

    Regular Full Time

    Within this role you will oversee and provide leadership to a team of multi-disciplinary Public Health Professionals to support the Division's mandate to provide environmental health protection programs outlined in the Ontario Public Health Standards.  The focus of this position will be vector-borne disease control.



    • Lead a team of Public Health Inspectors, seasonal students, a data coordinator and an administrative support.  The team is responsible for vector-borne disease surveillance, education, prevention and control
    • You will be responsible for coaching, recruiting, motivating, training and evaluating your employees while ensuring efficient and effective utilization of resources.  You will assign and delegate work and ensure quality service standards are met
    • You will ensure employees carry out their job duties in a safe and healthy manner, and you will be responsible for identifying program priorities and setting program objectives
    • Act as a resource to the Health Hazard Investigation team by providing consultation, guidance and support to the Manager and Environmental Research and Policy Analysts
    • Adhere to applicable legislation, practices and standards set out in the Department/Division’s Strategic Plan including End-to-End Public Health Practice
    • Collaborate with the Manager in developing strategies to continuously improve quality programs and monitor and evaluate service levels to identify areas of opportunity
    • Participate on applicable departmental, inter-health unit and inter-agency committees as required.
    • You will prepare, administer and monitor the team budget


    • A university degree in applied science with a major/specialization in public health combined with 5 years of experience in public health
    • A Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors certification is preferred alongside  three years of supervisory experience
    • Results oriented, customer/client focused and must demonstrate the ability to lead, manage and motivate a team
    • Excellent working knowledge of Regional policies and practices, provincial legislation/standards and have excellent skills in program planning, implementation and evaluation
    • Strong research, analytical and presentation skills
    • Superior communication skills (both verbal and written) are required to report and function as a key liaison between the concerns escalated from routine public inquiries and the Office of the Medical Officer of Health
    • Excellent negotiation and problem solving/decision making skills will assist you in managing the day to day operations to deal with inspection issues and public inquiries
    • Ability to build and maintain partnerships, negotiate and resolve conflict with external clients and internal stakeholders
    • Political awareness, tact and diplomacy are essential
    • Organizational and administrative skills including budget preparation and expenditure monitoring are required
    • An aptitude in computer skills, database management, quality control and data reporting is required in order to ensure Provincial and Health Unit targets are maintained accurately

    Location: 7120 Hurontario Street, Mississauga/2 Copper Road, Brampton

    Hours of Work: 35 hours per week; Monday-Friday
