    Job Description

    Supervisor, Health Protection (General Programs)

    Contract Duration:  Approximately thirteen (13) months

    The role: 

    Working within Health Protection and reporting to the Manager, you will support the Division’s mandate to deliver programs related to health protection and the Ontario Public Health Standards.

     

    The General Programs (GP) Team provides a variety of services outlined in the Ontario Public Health Standards. This includes food safety, safe water, health hazard prevention and management, infectious diseases (including rabies) and public health emergency preparedness.

     

    You will lead a team of Public Health Inspectors and administrative support staff that work out of the 7120 Hurontario Street office and travel throughout the Region of Peel. 

     

    Responsibilities:

    • Promote innovation and strategic thinking and guide your high functioning team as they strive for results
    • Work in partnership with the General Program’s Manager and other members of the GP management team
    • Responsible for identifying program priorities and setting program objectives
    • Ensure adherence to applicable legislation, practices and standards set out in the Province of Ontario and Health Protection Division
    • Hire, lead, develop, motivate, empower and evaluate a team of public health inspectors while ensuring efficient utilization of resources
    • Provide coaching and mentorship to your team and promote a high degree of independence, accountability and responsibility in the performance of their duties
    • Conduct performance appraisals, encouraging continuous learning and understanding of the principles of public health
    • Strong problem solving and ethical decision making skills
    • Manage change and support the organization’s strategic priorities and initiatives
    • Support implementation of Public Health's end-to-end Public Health Practice strategy and strategic plan priorities
    • Participate in various departmental, inter-departmental and inter-agency committees, and successful liaise and partner with community agencies to promote the Health Department
    • Foster a work culture that strives to maintain a high degree of customer and client service excellence while building collaborative working relationships within the Health Protection Division and external stakeholders

    Qualifications:

    • A minimum of two (2) years experience in a Public Health setting with Supervisory or other managerial experience
    • A university degree in applied science with a major/specialization in public health, and have a current Certificate in Public Health Inspection from the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors of Canada CIPHI (c), plus experience as a Public Health inspector
    • Working knowledge of Regional policies/procedures, provincial legislation/standards have a working knowledge of provincial standards and have excellent skills in program planning, implementation and evaluation
    • Must possess strong research, analytical and presentation skills
    • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) are essential to report and function as a key liaison between the concerns escalated from routine public inquiries and the Office of the Medical Officer of Health (particularly during periods of emergency situations)
    • Excellent negotiation and problem solving/decision making skills will assist you in managing the day to day operations to deal with inspection issues and public inquiries
    • Experience creating written reports that are technical in nature and must be factual and statistically sound
    • Political awareness, tact and diplomacy
    • Experience with budget preparation and expenditure monitoring
    • Working knowledge of MS Office programs, database management, quality control and data reporting is required in order to ensure Provincial and Health Unit targets are maintained accurately and work is completed in an efficient manner

    Location: 7120 Hurontario Street, Mississauga

    Hours of work: 35 hours/week; Monday to Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm
