    Job Description

    Community Development Worker

    Casual Part Time; Two (2) positions 

    Health Services – Communicable Diseases

    The Role:

    The Harm Reduction team, within the Communicable Diseases Division, requires a casual Community Development Worker to work within a collaborative team environment and provide outreach and harm reduction services to better build community capacity and health outcomes.


    • Deliver harm reduction services including injection drug, steroid and piercing supplies as well as naloxone training and distribution through the Peel Works Needle Exchange Program (NEP) mobile van
    • Build strong partnerships with various community organizations to provide optimal harm reduction services throughout the region of peel
    • Provide harm reduction services through daytime and evening shifts
    • Mobilize the community to respond to their health issues by acting as a resource consultant and an enabler
    • Target and access the ‘hard to reach’ communities and ‘at risk’ populations
    • Travel to various locations across the Region of Peel to serve clients, via the Peel Works NEP mobile van


    • Post-secondary education in a health or social services field, with a strong emphasis on community outreach and engagement
    • Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of harm reduction
    • Minimum one year experience as a community development worker (or similar), with recent experience in Public Health preferred
    • Experience working with diverse groups including the injection drug use (IDU) community
    • Knowledge of Peel’s IDU population and an awareness of trends and issues which impact health
    • Strong assessment and organizational skills
    • Working familiarity with crisis intervention techniques
    • Effective oral communication skills (in person and via the telephone)
    • Strong computer skills in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and Access
    • Ability to travel to various locations across the Region of Peel to serve clients, via the Peel Works NEP mobile van (valid driver's license)
    • Current CPR Certification is required 

    Location: 7120 Hurontario St, Mississauga

    Hours of work: No guarantee of hours; Shifts are between the hours of 3:30pm- 11:30pm Monday to Saturday
