    We are the Region of Peel.


    2019 Summer Student Program


    The Region of Peel’s Summer Student Program provides you with the opportunity to apply your academic experiences in a real-world, business-driven environment and develop your skills to be a leader in your community. During this summer program, you will build on your communication, presentation and business skills while working with a team to achieve the Region’s business goals.


    You will:

    • Make connections you can take with you the rest of your career
    • Participate in green initiatives and corporate social responsibility programs
    • Give back to the community by making meaningful contributions
    • Participate in community events
    • Learn about regional government

    When you work for the Region of Peel, you may be placed in a variety of positions across our departments. Students can apply to one or both streams of work:

    Business support:


    Includes finance, administrative, law and legal, housing services, social services, child care services, employment services, call centre, front desk, etc. There may be specialized positions available in services relating to civil engineering, health and human/social services, finance and environmental sciences.

    • Assist staff with day to day responsibilities and special projects
    • Interact with internal departments, residents and external stakeholders
    • Provide program/project support including filing, scanning, data entry, delivering/sorting mail
    • Job shadow staff to learn more about your career aspirations

    Infrastructure support:


    Includes work at various centres across the Region including housing, community recycling centres, road operations, TransHelp, etc.

    • Indoor/outdoor general maintenance including painting, digging and heavy lifting
    • Maintenance/cleaning of heavy equipment, light vehicles, garbage compactor equipment
    • Traffic control responsibilities, directing traffic, sign installation
    • Greet customers, provide excellent service, process payments
    • Landscaping, mowing, gardening, litter pick-up
    • Load and unload supplies and equipment
    • May require wearing Personal Protective Equipment and Green Patch Safety Boots

    We’re looking for: 

    • Highly motivated self-starters
    • Proven people/project leadership throughout your academic career (on/off campus)
    • Previous experience either through employment or academic clubs
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a results-oriented, challenging environment
    • Effective coaching, facilitation, presentation and team building skills
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Ability to give/receive constructive feedback
    • Willingness to work flexible schedules, including early mornings, evening and/or weekends

    Timelines for 2019:

    • Posting – the posting will be open Jan. 1- 31
    • Screening/Interviewing – February. Returning students do not require an interview.
    • Offers – packages will be sent in February/March
    • First day of work – May 6
    • Last day of work – Aug. 30

    Please note above timelines are approximate and we may interview/offer later, if required.


    Additional requirements:

    • Must be a full time student enrolled in a post-secondary program and returning to full-time post-secondary studies in September 2019
    • Must be available from May - August inclusive
    • Previous office/ labour/volunteer experience is an asset
    • Proficiency with MS Office for business support positions
    • Experience using manual and power tools/equipment  for infrastructure positions is an asset
    • Detail oriented with good mathematical skills
    • Strong customer service focus
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Organized with excellent time management skill
    • Valid “G” Driver’s license in good standing for some infrastructure positions
