    Assistant, Legal Services Litigation

    Corporate Services, Legal Services

    Contract Duration: 13 Months


    The Legal Assistant will provide legal and office administrative support to Senior Legal Counsel, Legal Counsel, Law Clerks and Articling Student, in the service of all departments and divisions of the Region, in specialized areas of the law.



    • Organize and maintain a high volume of legal files concerning highly sensitive and confidential matters pertaining to all departments across the corporation
    • Organize and maintain filing systems, and law reference library; gather and organize support material; prepare briefs
    • Coordinate and monitor file activity, independently and as directed; screen incoming correspondence and respond or prepare draft responses; initiate and follow up at appropriate intervals; maintain follow-up systems; organize meetings and maintain solicitor’s calendar, multi-task in a deadline-oriented environment
    • Develop and maintain collaborative internal and external working relationships; liaise and communicate independently between solicitor, clients throughout the corporation, outside counsel, and external third parties, obtaining necessary information from clients and responding to requests and inquiries from clients, councillors and third parties
    • Coordinate the preparation of cross-departmental Council reports and documentation
    • Manage purchasing and document execution procedures: prepare purchase orders and related documentation, and payments; prepare and follow document execution procedures 
    • Transcribe legal and other documents of a highly confidential and technical nature; prepare high quality correspondence, reports, memos, opinions, briefing notes, agreements
    • Knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure, Practice Directions, general court practice, Small Claims Court Rules, Rules of Procedure of the Human Rights Tribunal and Ontario Labour Relations Board, and other legislation and the ability to interpret and apply and keep up-to-date
    • Serving and filing of such documents as necessary with the Court/Tribunal within the prescribed time and recognizing deadline dates
    • Familiarity with legal concepts, legal terminology, case citations
    • Knowledge of court system and court filing process


    • Post-secondary education in legal office administration and related law office experience
    • A minimum of five years experience in civil litigation gained in a law office

    • Familiarity with real estate, commercial law, labour relations, employment, municipal law, and/or litigation processes and documentation would be considered an asset

    • Proficient dictation and word processing skills, combined with a keen sense of accuracy and attention to detail
    • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills to deal with legal staff, client departments, Councillors, senior management and court officials
    • Effective organizational and time management skills
    • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
    • Strong computer skills, utilizing MS Office
    • Able to deal with multiple tasks and priorities
    • Able to work independently, take initiative and possess a “self-starting” attitude
    • Strong judgment, tact, and problem solving abilities

    Location: 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton  

    Hours of work: 8:30am - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, 35 hours/week
